Working as a Software Engineer

Why Germany is worth it for Indian software engineers, and what to expect.

The big picture

Germany is one of Europe's largest tech markets with a chronic shortage of software engineers. Indian IT professionals are highly sought after, Berlin (startups), Munich (automotive tech), Hamburg (e-commerce), and Frankfurt (finance tech) actively recruit from India. As an unregulated profession, no formal degree recognition is legally required; your skills and degree are evaluated by the employer and immigration authority for the Blue Card.

Why Germany for Software Engineers?

1Over 137,000 IT vacancies — shortage strongly favours skilled candidates
2EU Blue Card eligible from day one: salary threshold ~€50,700/year
3English-first workplaces common, especially at international companies and Berlin startups
421 months to Permanent Residence with B1 German via Blue Card
530 days paid annual leave is standard across all German employers

Degree Recognition

Whether your qualification needs formal recognition, and how to get it.

🔓
Unregulated profession
No formal Anerkennung required, your degree is verified informally for the visa.

In short

Software engineering is an unregulated profession. No formal Anerkennung (degree recognition) is legally required to work. However, for the Blue Card visa, immigration authorities verify your degree. Indian degrees from well-ranked universities (IITs, NITs, BITS Pilani, NAAC A++ institutions) are well-regarded by German employers.

Recognition steps

The usual order of operations.

  1. 1Check your university on anabin.kmk.org, look for H+ or H± rating
  2. 2H+ rated: degree directly acceptable for Blue Card application
  3. 3H± or unrated: get a Statement of Comparability from KMK (~€200, 4–6 weeks)
  4. 4Get degree + transcripts translated by a sworn German translator
  5. 5Submit documents with your visa application (employer HR team can guide you)
💡
Tip: Most IIT, NIT, and BITS Pilani graduates rarely need the KMK statement — German tech HR departments know these institutions. Smaller or newer universities may need it.
