👁️ Eye Test (Sehtest)

At any optician (Optiker). Takes 5 minutes. Costs ~€8–15. You receive a certificate valid for 2 years.

🩺 First Aid Course (Erste Hilfe)

9-hour course, available at DRK, ADAC, and others. Costs ~€30–50. Certificate valid for life (no expiry for driving licence purposes).

📸 Biometric Photo

At any photo studio. Must meet biometric standards (34×45mm, plain background). Costs ~€5–10.

🚗 Fahrschule Registration

Join a Fahrschule (driving school). They guide you through the rest of the process and submit your application to the Straßenverkehrsamt.

Unlike some countries, Indian licence holders must pass the German theory test (Theorieprüfung). Study the Lernhilfe (app: iFahrschulTheorie or Fahrschule.de).

How Long Is My Indian Licence Valid?

6 months after Anmeldung, after that, driving on an Indian licence is no longer legal.

Your Indian driving licence is valid in Germany for 6 months from the date of your first Anmeldung (address registration). After 6 months, you legally cannot drive in Germany on an Indian licence alone. You must have started the conversion process by then.

First 6 months
You can drive freely in Germany using your original Indian driving licence + an official translation (International Driving Permit or a certified translation in German). The IDP from India (issued by the RTO) is accepted.
After 6 months
Driving on an Indian licence is no longer legal. If caught, you risk fines and the licence may be confiscated. Start the conversion process before this deadline.
International Driving Permit (IDP)
Get an IDP from the RTO in India before you leave. It is valid alongside your original licence for 1 year or the expiry of the IDP. It is not a substitute for the German conversion but eases the 6-month transition.
Tourists vs residents
If you are visiting Germany as a tourist (not registered/Angemeldet), your Indian licence remains valid throughout your stay (up to 90 days under the Schengen visa). The 6-month rule applies only after Anmeldung.

Theory test, mandatory
You must pass the German Theorieprüfung at a TÜV, DEKRA, GTÜ, or ADAC test centre. 30 questions (car) from a bank of 1,000+. Each question worth 2–5 penalty points. Fail at 10 points. Pass rate for first attempts: ~70%.
Practical test — mandatory
The Fahrprüfung is mandatory. However, because you have experience driving in India, most instructors find Indian applicants need far fewer lessons than complete beginners. Average 5–15 lessons vs 20–40 for beginners.
Can I skip theory since I drove in India?
No. German law does not grant theory test exemption for any country outside the approved exchange list. The 1,000-question pool covers German traffic law, road signs, and priority rules, which are different from India.
Language of the theory test
Available in English, Turkish, Arabic, and several other languages — but not in all Indian languages. English is fine for most Indian applicants. The test interface is digital and intuitive.

Many Fahrschulen in major German cities have English-speaking instructors. Ask explicitly. In Munich, Berlin, Frankfurt, and Stuttgart, finding one is not hard.
Check Google and Indian community forums
Search "[your city] Fahrschule Indian community" on Facebook or Reddit. Indians who have recently got their licence share recommendations and warnings regularly.
Compare per-lesson rates
Ask for a full breakdown upfront: registration fee, per-lesson rate (regular, Autobahn, Überlandfahrt, Nacht), and exam fees. Get it in writing.
Choose a school near home/work
Lessons are usually 45–90 minutes including travel. A nearby school means less wasted time and more flexibility for evening or weekend slots.
Theory in English at the Fahrschule
You can take theory classes at the Fahrschule in German, or self-study in English using the app and take the TÜV/DEKRA test in English. Self-study + English test is usually faster.
Do not rush the practical test
German Fahrschule instructors will tell you when you are ready. Do not push to take the test before you are. A failed attempt costs €150+ and adds weeks to the process.
